Living out in a rural area is fantastic. It’s quiet, there’s lots of space and the nearest neighbor is at least half a mile away. Although living out in these areas is a treat, finding a satellite internet provider can be troublesome.  Calling phone companies and cable TV providers looking to see if the offer any sort of broadband internet service and hearing the answer no is disappointing. But luckily, rural dwellers are without options. Satellite internet is an affordable and a wonderful solution for folks like us. Now I know we've heard that satellite internet isn’t very fast or that the service isn’t very good, but things have changed.

Satellite technology has improved and is getting better. In 2011, the ViaSat-1 was launched, which is currently the highest-capacity communications satellite in the world. This particular satellite has more capacity for data than all the satellites currently covering North America. And companies like HughesNet are able to utilize that satellite to provide customers, like myself, with high-speed internet.

In fact, satellite internet is able to achieve download speeds of up to 20 Mbps, which is comparable for any mid-tier cable internet service. The only downside is that some companies have data allowances on their plans, so those who want unlimited plans are out of luck. But most plans come with a pretty generous data allowance and offer time periods where data used during those times don't count amongst a cap.

So as I was saying before, living in a rural area is great and now with satellite internet, having access to a high speed internet connection is no longer a problem. Now if we can just figure out how to get pizza to my house in less than an hour....
